Kim: Day 6 Durango & SIlverton

SA2SOS Jul 26, 2015

Our sixth day on the road actually didn't bring us on the road at all - I did no driving and the little Civic got a much needed rest. We left the driving to the train and bus thanks to the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

We took a bus up to Silverton via the Million Dollar Highway and a guided tour from the bus driver - he was great and so were the views.

Once in Silverton we were treated to a backcountry historic tour of the Silverton area - old jails, avalanche distruction, abandoned gold and silver mines and the like. SIlverton is a cute little town.

My favorite stop was at the Old Hundred GOld Mine where we got up close and personal with the mountain. We were better know as Gem, Tex and Short Stuff as we went 1600 feet into the "hill" to see how mining was done.

Our "ride" back to Durango was a 3.5 hour meandering back through the valley along the MIllion Dollar Road in a train car - and oh the views - everywhere you looked!

Once back in town, we enjoyed dinner at the historic Southern Belle Saloon, with costumed waitresses and ragtime piano player, and enjoyed a relaxing walk along main street in the evening air. Unfortunately, the sunset didn't call our name today - we were enjoying the paino tuens around taht time, but we did get a chance to see moonrise over Durango.
